Garden Winter Survivor

    Description

The Garden Winter Survivor mix is designed to keep a living root in the soil over the winter months to maximize soil health benefits. The mix is also really great for suppressing early spring weeds that will struggle to germinate in the presence of a vigorous cover crop.

Cold-hardy, nitrogen-fixing legumes such as hairy vetch, winter peas, balansa clover, and winter lentils provide organic nitrogen in the spring. Cereal rye and soft red winter wheat deliver massive root growth and living mulch for weed suppression. We have purposely omitted brassicas from this mix to avoid hosting brassica pests that plague many gardens.

        What's in the Mix

        Planting Instructions

Broadcast and lightly incorporate into a clean garden bed.

        Timing

For best results, plant 4-6 weeks before the first average frost date during the fall. Planting can continue even through the first few frosts but the mix will likely not grow much in the fall and spring growth will be only from the most winter hardy species in the mix, likely rye and hairy vetch.

When is the right time to plant?

Garden Winter Survivor has a minimum germination temp of 40 °F. Reference your average soil temperature to determine ideal planting time.
