What’s Frosty Berseem Clover?
Berseem clover, Trifolium alexandrinum, is a cool-season annual legume with very low hard seed counts, allowing for quick establishment and lessening its potential to become a weed.
Frosty Berseem Clover is a multi-cut variety that’s capable of delivering multiple harvests in a single season. It represents a huge breakthrough in cold tolerance for berseem clovers, surviving temperatures down to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Is That Alfalfa?
No, it’s not! Berseem clover is often mistaken for alfalfa, which brings us to one of its key benefits. Recent studies have shown that an 80/20 alfalfa/berseem clover mix could increase yield, crude protein, and water soluble carbohydrate levels in hay fields.
Here are three ways to use Frosty Berseem in your alfalfa stand
- Use Frosty Berseem as a nurse crop. 80% alfalfa and 20% frosty is a great place to start. Berseem clover will establish quickly, making your first cutting alfalfa quality instead of a simple cereal.
- Use Frosty Berseem to cover a weakening or cold-killed stand of alfalfa. The average life of an alfalfa field is 3-5 years. By year 3 or 4 those alfalfa plants can be pretty worn out. Adding Frosty berseem extends the life of your existing field without compromising on quality.
- Use Frosty Berseem to bridge the gap between your last year of an alfalfa field and the following crop. Frosty Berseem works great on its own. Instead of going fallow, harvest a Frosty Berseem Clover crop!

About Green Cover

Green Cover sprouted in 2008, when brothers Keith and Brian Berns experimented with cover crops on their family farm in Bladen, Nebraska. They observed and experienced how diverse cover crop mixes leverage the biological processes that God designed into creation and Green Cover was launched to make cover crop seed available to other farmers.
